A very creative Italian lady, Silvia Bisconti, is the mind behind Raptus and Roses, a fashion studio in Belluno, North Italy. Silvia carefully select vintage textile and vintage dresses around the world.

Dutch designer Kyra van Ineveld did research the impact of the new information technology tools and how they change the information system and the truth.

Taking Wikipedia as case study, Kyra did investigate the topics that are updated most often from the public of this online encyclopaedia. She narrowed them down to five: Obama, war in Gaza, Catholic Church, global warming, race and intelligence.

Then she printed all the changes in a massive series of books, combining the old book style and the information (wikipedia style) in order to promote the real truth.

Swiss designer Nathalie Stampfli did develop this soap dispenser which is using solid soap.

Nathalie says: "Today, most of the soap we use is liquid soap, which contains a lot of water. Block soap instead is more concentrated and therefore has some ecological benefits: You don’t transport unnecessary water around. In place of plastic bottles you can simply use paper for packaging. The solid blocks can easily be piled and allow a greater space efficiency in a truck."

Kate Spade has recently opened a lovely pop up store in London.

I discovered this well known american bags designer years ago, and I did like immediately her love for bold colours, Kate's green en pink are vibrant colours. I did read one of her books "Style".

The book is not particularly deep, I mean Kate gives general advises for choosing outfits, but the illustration are lovely. In this pop up shop you can find all the Spade signature products, the bags and stationery.

Kate has also started a small fashion collection, which I find pretty and different form the collections available around, have a look at it!

Lovely "ceramic" stories from ceramic artist Helen Beard.

Helen did develop a technique that reminds a bit of watercolors.

The drawing is transferred on the ceramic using a form of relief print. Colour is painted over the drawing using different washes of ceramic stain, and finally the pots are dip-glazed and smoothed down ready for the final stage of firing.

I know I did not write for some time, you have to forgive me, at work was super busy and then last week I attended an extremely nice and intensive program at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
While in NY I could visit this amazing exhibition, right on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum.
If you are there make sure you go. The twin brothers and artists, Mike & Doug Stern did built a special organic structure, made of bambu'. They work on it every day improving and changing the structure all the time. So each visitors has his own personal experience: "Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism."
Simply beautiful.

These beautiful pieces are the work of Alissia Melka Teichroew, a designer based in NY.

Alissia Melka-Teichroew had the idea of creating a ball joint -normally assembled with separate parts- as one single piece. Through the use of selective laser sintering she was able to literally make a ball inside a ball. Hence, the industrial connecter was transformed into an object of beauty and wonder.A clean and striking jewelry collection was created around this innovative concept. The designer explains: " Roots of plants have been directed to fill out a form on different nutrient mediums over a period of time. Another exhibition I am very sorry to have no seen in Milan, was the one of the Taiwan Craft Research Institute. A collection of their last products, a mix od taiwanese craftmanship and design, carefully curated by Dutch Designer Gijs Bakker, was presented last april, under the new brand name of Yii.

I am extremely intrigued by this Coocon chair by designer Rock Wang.

Wang weaves bamboo strips together by hand to form the organic underlying structure for his “Cocoon Plan” furniture. This intricate process takes about five days to complete. Then he hangs the chair in the air by running a line through the circular openings. These openings also serve as handles for moving the rather large chair around. Wang then allows silk worms to spin a natural cocoon around the form for five days, creating a stunning chair covered in silk. Beutiful!

Formafantasma - Milan 2010

I did use these grey days - yes it is again grey in here! - for browsing the net in search of the most interesting concepts of the last Milan Fuori Salone.

I was really glad to see how the italian designers duo Formafantasma is growing and showing really NICE work. Their products were presented at the Rossana Orlandi Space. Here you can watch the exhibition video and the designers interview. The designers explain the Autarchy title as follows : "AUTARCHY OUTLINES A HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO WHERE A COMMUNITY IS EMBRACING A SERENE AND SELF INFLICTED EMBARGO WHERE NATURE IS PERSONALLY CULTIVATED, HARVESTED AND PROCESSED, TO FEED AND MAKE TOOLS TO SERVE HUMAN NECESSITIES. “AUTARKY” PAYS HOMAGE TO THE UNCOMPLICATED, THE SIMPLE AND THE EVERYDAY."
I love the attention for the detail of these objects and the simplicity of the installation.

yes I am back! how are you? did you visit Milan Design Week? did you spot the newest of the newest?

Well I was a bit scared to not be part of the Milan circus for the first time in years, however my socio-cultural trip through Cuba did open my eyes. Yes, I can survive withouth design furniture, believe me!

It was great to be in a new cultural enviroment, meeting creative people who are not afraid to express their emotions. I did learn a lot and I am now full of energy, inspiration and idea's.

One of the first change is the content of this space, I will share with you also fashion and photography stuff, two of my other interests.

Flips flops and wild hair - but not in Milan

Dear Blog Friends,

while the crazy design world will meet again in Milan next week, I decided to run, run away from all this for a little while! I need sun and a place where my hair can be curly and wild with no fear, where I can wear flips flops the all day. I need a place for thinking, get inspired and see things from a new angle.
I will not be in Milan, for the first time in nine years. I will miss it, in the begin, but I will survive, in the end. For the one of you going, try to not take design stuff too serious - have fun - enjoy Italy, my beautiful country! I will meet you again here, in a couple of weeks.

Dear fashion addicted around the world,

the last Viktor & Rolf F/W show was again amazing. The Glamour Factory - this was the show title & collection theme - was the combination of the giant shoulders of the 90's and a theatrical performance. The designer were first stripping the models from the various layers and then re-dressing them.
The designers explained: "This time around, we want to show that something can be both wearable and extreme at the same time. It goes beyond a mere idea; it is literally ready for production."
Please notice the beautiful stage decor designed by my dear friends of Studio Job, Job Smeets en Nynke Tynagel, an incredible complicated print of industrial pieces.
This is a clear example of Dutch creativity at his best!!

She is busy since 2008 with her brand Moi Multiple and she has just presented the last F/W collection during Milan Fashion Week, getting lots of positive reactions. In her web you can read more about her vision: " It is a though over the contemporary society transition. The individual is more and more prismatic and with a multiple identity. The woman roles evolved and develop asking several aptitudes, competences and personalities. The brand wants to reflect the woman’s different personality thanks to a transitory stylistic identity, always changeable."

I like her approach, so I hope to see her clothes around soon.

Video artist Francesca Grilli mixes video techniques, photography and performance all in one. The results are particularly poetic videos about family relations and the space around us. In Gordon you find a special portrait of her relation with the grandfather, she says: "The aim of this work is to consider heritage, secret identification and distance in the human relationships. I ask my grand-father, Giordano Bruno, a man of eighty-seven years, to play (bocce)bowls with me, an activity that he plays every day. we play with new rules, keeping the winner and the colour of the play unknown , using many bowls and possibilities." Kiki van Eijk - new work in Rome

If you are in Rome you MUST visit the new exhibition of Kiki van Eijk works, opening on March 4th at the gallery SecondoMe. I know Kiki since a while now and everytime I am amazed with the quality and vision of her work. Kiki did reach a big spot in the Dutch Design scene, thanks to extremely hard work but also to a clear identity, a clear conceptual thinking and continuous experiments with materials and shapes.

She also managed to stay simple and to keep "her beautiful soul" which in the Design World is not that easy - believe me!! I am working there everyday.

This exhibition will move to Milan in April, for the Settimana del Salone del Mobile.

Ninna Thorarinsdottir

A group of young international and very talented designers did work at a special project with metal casting called Copy nature . The results are really interesting; take a look for example at this, a Yellow and Purple combination of elements from a banana and an eggplant to form the heel of the shoe. It is cast in bronze and highly polished by designer Ninna Thorarinsdottir (Iceland - pity I could not find her web!).

I have just discovered these objects, and immediately love them! David Chipperfield explains: "This collection was inspired by vernacular ceramics from korea, japan, and china, and conceived as an exercise in refining functional household objects. the name “tonale” refers to Giorgio Morandi’s use of color tonality imbuing his daily objects with a sense of individuality."

I am so glad I have discovered the link to the Vedovamazzei studio.

Italian artists Stella Scala and Simeone Crispino work together from several years under the name "vedovamazzei", which translated means "Mazzei's widow", a name they found on an old cemetery board and that for some reasons did inspire them. Their work is a clear challenge to conventions, has a component of humor with a poetic and political eye to the human situation. Bravi!!!

Dutch designer Lotty Lindeman is going to show her "Tassenkast" at the coming Object Rotterdam design fair. Lotty thinks that bags are nowdays mainly perceived as fashion object, while she sees them more as an interior product. To me this could also be a beautiful art installation.
